HONOLULU -- NFL great Jerry Rice is already bucking conventional fantasy football wisdom in a new Pro Bowl format inspired by the popular hobby. Rice picked New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees and St. Louis defensive end Robert Quinn to anchor his Pro Bowl team on Tuesday, opting for a passer over a runner. Rice made the selections in Hawaii after winning a coin toss against Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders. Rice called tails. The decision prompted Sanders to select Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles and Houston defensive end J.J. Watt for Sundays game. "Dont think we forget Jerry picked them first," Watt said when asked whether the new schoolyard-style format would leave players with bruised egos. The toss and selections started a new process for the NFL in selecting this years Pro Bowl teams. Rice and Sanders are serving as captains and general managers in charge of divvying up the NFL stars. "Im so pumped -- Im ready to run some routes," Rice said at a news conference after winning the toss, picking his players and embracing them as active player captains. "Thats exactly how I thought it was going to go," Sanders said. The toss gave Sanders and Rice another chance for good-natured trash talk in a game thats become as much about showcasing their personalities as celebrating the accomplishments of the NFLs best. Rice and Sanders split up interior lineman, punters, fullbacks and special teamers during the first part of the draft, with the 22 picks announced on a tape-delayed show. Rice and Sanders went position by position, skipping the usual fantasy strategy of prioritizing positions -- an element that will be in play Wednesday when the rest of the 60 players are divvied up. Sanders picked Ndamukong Suh with his first defensive tackle selection, and then opted for Gerald McCoy and Dontari Poe. Rice grabbed Jason Hatcher and Marcell Dareus, and was assigned Kyle Williams. Among guards, Rice picked two of Brees New Orleans teammates, Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs, along with Evan Mathis. Sanders picked Marshal Yanda and Logan Mankins and was assigned Kyle Long. Centers Mike Pouncey and Alex Mack went to Sanders, while Ryan Kalil and Nick Mangold went to Rice. Rice picked Mike Tolbert at fullback while Sanders got Marcel Reece. Sanders said Reece will not get the ball. "Hes blocking for that man over there," Sanders said, pointing toward Charles. Punter Johnny Hekker and special teamer Justin Bethel ended up on team Rice, while Sanders picked punter Brandon Fields and special teamer Matthew Slater. The Pro Bowl coaches, Chuck Pagano of Indianapolis for Team Sanders and Ron Rivera of Carolina for Team Rice, selected long snappers as a need position. Pagano went with Carolinas J.J. Jansen and Rivera responded in kind, going with Matt Overton of the Colts. The second part of the draft will air live on the NFL Network. NFL officials are hoping the new format is a recipe for a more competitive game on the field and higher ratings as the bulk of league fans look toward the Super Bowl on Feb. 2. The star wide receivers career is now in peril. The Cleveland Browns learned Wednesday that Gordons indefinite suspension by the NFL has been upheld and he will miss at least 16 games for another violation of the leagues substance abuse policy. A repeat drug offender, Gordon had appealed the penalty, hoping it would be reduced so he could play this season. The NFL, though, came down hard on Gordon, who must now pay the price for stepping out of bounds. The league announced that arbitrator Harold Henderson supported Gordons yearlong suspension for marijuana use. The Pro Bowler, who was subject to more frequent testing, will begin serving his suspension immediately and the league said in its statement that his "eligibility for reinstatement will be determined following the 2014 season." In the meantime, Gordon is not allowed to practice with the team, attend meetings or other club functions. The Browns had no immediate response to the ban. They had feared for months this would be the outcome, and now that its official, the club will have to somehow make up for the league-leading 1,646 yards, 18.9 yards per catch and nine touchdowns Gordon produced last season. "Id like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans," Gordon said in a statement. "I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didnt exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. While hes out, Gordon, who served a two-game suspension for a drug violation last season, will need to pass drug tests, comply with treatment and apply for reinstatement with Commissioner Roger Goodell before he plays again. As the days past, there was growing speculation he might not be punished to the letter of the collective bargaining agreement. But Henderson sided with the leagues initial ruling after an exhaustive process. Gordons representatives also said test results of his samples were inconsistent and should be thrown out. There was speculation the league might go softer on Gordon following the public outcry after Baltimore running back Ray Rice was suspended for two games on a domestic violence charge. Instead, the league put Gordon on the sideline for all 16 games and will wait to see how he behaves before deciding whether to let him back. Gordon didnt help his cause with two legal issues as his case dragged on. He was charged with drunken driving after his arrest in Raleigh, North Carolina, on July 5. In May, he was stopped for speeding in Strongsville, Ohio, and one of the passengers in his car was cited for marijuana possession. The talented 23-year-old led the league with 1,646 yards receiving last season despite being banned from the first two games for a failed drug test. It was his second known violation as a pro and Gordon said he had inadvertently taken codeine contained in a prescription cough syrup. Gordons loss is a crippling blow to Clevelands offence, depriving the Browns of their best big-play threat. Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Cameron is now the teams primary target, and he may find himself double-teamed and without open spaces to run routes now that Gordon is missing. The Browns took a risk in selecting Gordon in the 2012 supplemental draft, forfeiting a second-round pick to take the speedy 6-foot-3, 225-pounder who failed at least three drug tests in college for marijuana abuse. The team has vowed to do all it can to help and support Gordon. During training camp, owner Jimmy Haslam said the team never considered cutting him. As he awaited word from the league, Gordon was noticeably different. He dropped passes and seemed detached during an exhibition game in Washington.
